The Recording Industry Association of America says it plans to take legal action against computer users who illegally share and download music online through file sharing web sites.
Critics accused the RIAA of resorting to heavy-handed tactics likely to alienate millions of music fans.
RIAA counters that downloading music without paying for it is no different than shoplifting, and that taking legal action against illegal downloaders is no different than stores who prosecute shoplifters.
