Downloading Blues

You've most likely heard about people going shopping when they're feeling blue, or perhaps you've done it yourself. Shopping takes their mind off their troubles and gives them an emotional lift. I believe I have uncovered an unique web variant and am wondering if I may be the first to identify this phenomena.

A friend of mine innocently mentioned via ICQ that she was feeling blue and had to go find something to download. Rather than shopping, the trick now it seems, is to download something!

I got to thinking...

If downloading one program makes you feel better, how good would downloading 10 programs make you feel? Or 50 programs! Man, we could go really euphoric. What if it were possible to overdose on downloads? I can just see the headline and opening teaser:

Computer Junkie Dies In Freak Accident

Download queen overdoses on bandwidth, blood samples revealed an excessive level of pixelation...

What if you lost your internet connection? Would you suffer withdrawals? Would you copy or move files back and forth between folders, trying to emulate the euphoria of downloading?

Perhaps there is a need to start a 12 Step Program for download junkies. I'm sure the government would fund it, after all, it's only OUR money, not theirs. It would be just another way to buy votes. Politicians like that...

"A sympathetic Scot summed it all up very neatly in the remark, "You should make a point of trying every experience once, excepting incest and folk dancing.""
